This site started as an attempt to quantify the time I have spent on BumpList (www.bumplist.net) since I first was alerted to its presence.

If you do not know about The Bumplist, don't feel too bad. This is NOT your average mailing list. According to the main page of the site:

BumpList is a mailing list aiming to re-examine the culture and rules of online email lists. BumpList only allows for a minimum amount of subscribers so that when a new person subscribes, the first person to subscribe is "bumped", or unsubscribed from the list. Once subscribed, you can only be unsubscribed if someone else subscribes and "bumps" you off. BumpList actively encourages people to participate in the list process by requiring them to subscribe repeatedly if they are bumped off. The focus of the project is to determine if by attaching simple rules to communication mediums, the method and manner of correspondences that occur as well as behaviors of connection will change over time.

I first heard about the Bumplist in the Windows Daily Newsletter from Lockergnome. The article read:

{E-mail list project} Reality TV show wanna-bes or turn-downs can do something that's better than getting voted off. Join the BumpList, a mailing list that has a limited amount of subscribers (currently, six people), so when a new person subscribes, another is "bumped" or unsubscribed from the list. After subscribing, I'd be sweating bullets not knowing when I could be bumped and having to re-subscribe. What do they actually talk about in the list? Anything. As a competitive person, I couldn't handle this interesting experiment. Instead, I'll watch the stats and root for someone. When this review goes live, I'll bet the BumpList will go wild with Gnomies. Give me a G! Give me an N! Aw, you get the idea. [Cheerleader Meryl]

The newsletter hit my Inbox at 6:16 PM on July 29th, and by 6:48 PM (after sorting my e-mail and finally reading the important ones) I had my first Welcome to Bumplist! e-mail. Within 2 minutes I had my first e-mail from a list member:

"I'm way to drunk to drive
CU or never
S."

and my first You got Bumped! e-mail. I was hooked.

The following pages are an unofficial archive of Bumplist milestones. Some of them are my personal milestones, but this site has taken on a life of its own so there are a lot of other people represented here as well.

I hope that this site will entice you to visit the Bumplist if you have not already done so. If you are a BumpLister, there are a lot of memories contained in these pages.

Happy Bumping!
